So, you've moved to Towcester. Welcome! (Or you are looking at moving - then welcome too!)
Once the boxes are (mostly) unpacked and you've worked out which cupboard the mugs belong in, it's time for the much nicer part of moving somewhere new: getting to know your town.
Towcester may be small, but there’s plenty tucked away beyond the A5. From the walk you'll end up doing again and again to your new favourite coffee stop, independent shops and places that make you feel part of the community, here are 10 places every new Towcester local should know.
1. Towcester Watermeadows
📍 Northampton Road
This will probably become one of those places you stop thinking of as a destination and simply start saying, “Shall we walk through the Watermeadows?”
Towcester's largest public open space is right behind the town centre, with paths through grassland and wetland alongside the River Tove.
It's perfect for dog walks, family walks, clearing your head after work or grabbing a takeaway coffee and going for a wander.
You can also walk across towards Bury Mount and the Old Mill, making it an easy way to combine some fresh air with a trip into town.
Local tip: Take your coffee with you and make the Watermeadows part of your weekend routine.
2. Towcester's Coffee Spots
One of the first important jobs after moving anywhere new: finding your coffee shop.
Luckily, Towcester has several independent places to choose from – whether you're after brunch, a quick flat white or coffee and a rather good slice of cake.
Rather than listing them all again here, we've already done the important research for you.
☕ Read our Ultimate Towcester Coffee & Cake Map to discover Fabrice, Ten Hands, The Old Bakery and TED Alpine Bakehouse – complete with an interactive map to help you find them.
Consider this your permission to try them all before choosing a favourite.
3. Towcester Mill Brewery
📍 Chantry Lane
Hidden behind Watling Street beside the Watermeadows, Towcester Mill is one of those places you might not realise is there when you first move to town.
The independent brewery and Tap Room sits inside the old Grade II listed Towcester Mill and has a large beer garden overlooking the Watermeadows.
It's not just somewhere for a pint either. The Mill hosts regular events including live music, comedy and quiz nights, making it a very useful place to know when you're starting to build a local social life.
Dogs are welcome in parts of the Mill too.
Good to know: You can walk straight there from the Watermeadows.
4. Towcester Museum
📍 White Horse Yard, 163–165 Watling Street
If you're going to call Towcester home, it's worth discovering what was here before you.
And there was rather a lot.
Towcester's history stretches back thousands of years, with strong Roman roots and layers of local history that are surprisingly easy to walk past without noticing.
The little museum in White Horse Yard brings that history to life and is a great starting point for understanding your new home.
You can also pick up information about Towcester's historic Town Trail and start spotting some of the buildings and landmarks you've probably already driven past dozens of times.
5. The Forum & Towcester Library
📍 Moat Lane
Not the most glamorous entry on the list – but possibly one of the most useful.
The Forum is home to Towcester Library, and it's worth knowing about even if you haven't borrowed a library book in years.
Alongside books, Wi-Fi and printing, the library runs local activities and events and provides access to various council and community services.
It's one of those places that becomes increasingly useful once you actually live here.
And because it's right beside the Watermeadows, it's easy to combine the two.
6. St Lawrence Church, Bury Mount & Old Towcester
📍 Around Chantry Lane and Moat Lane
You don't have to be religious to appreciate St Lawrence Church or a history enthusiast to enjoy this little part of Towcester.
St Lawrence is a beautiful Norman church and just nearby you'll find Bury Mount – the remains of Towcester's Norman motte-and-bailey castle.
Walk up to the top of Bury Mount for views across the town, then cross towards the Watermeadows and the Mill.
It's one of the nicest ways to realise quite how much history is hidden behind the High Street.
7. Towcester's Independent High Street
Once you've moved here, try not to make every shopping trip a dash to one of the big retail parks.
Have a wander down Watling Street instead.
Towcester has a lovely collection of independent businesses tucked between the everyday essentials – cafés, gifts, interiors, antiques, beauty, food and plenty of places you'll gradually discover for yourself.
Shopping locally isn't just about buying something. It's also one of the easiest ways to start recognising faces and feeling like you actually live somewhere rather than simply having a house there.
8. The Slow Life
📍 213 Watling Street
Okay, we're slightly biased about this one.
The Slow Life is our little corner of Towcester, inside Miller & Chalk on Watling Street.
You'll find thoughtful gifts, homeware, vintage finds and pieces designed right here in Towcester – including our own collection celebrating the town itself.
We love being part of the High Street, but we also love meeting people who've just moved here.
So come in and say hello. Tell us you're new. Ask us where to get coffee, where to walk the dog or what you've missed so far.
We probably have an opinion.
9. Bell Plantation
📍 Watling Street
If you've just moved house, there's a reasonable chance you'll find yourself at Bell Plantation sooner rather than later.
The garden centre sits just outside the centre of Towcester and is handy for plants, garden bits and those inevitable house-and-garden jobs that suddenly appear once you've unpacked.
It's also one of those places most Towcester locals simply know – so now you do too.
10. Towcester Racecourse
📍 London Road
You don't have to become a racing enthusiast just because you've moved to Towcester, but it would be rather difficult to ignore the Racecourse altogether.
Sitting on the edge of town, it's one of Towcester's most recognisable landmarks and today is also used as an events and hospitality venue.
Even if you're not heading there regularly, it's part of the identity of the town – and certainly one of those places you'll quickly learn to use when giving someone directions.
A Few More Things Worth Knowing
Part of becoming a local is discovering the things that don't necessarily make it into a visitor guide.
Keep an eye out for Towcester's Farmers' Market, held in Sponne Arcade, as well as the regular markets, craft events, music, community activities and seasonal events that happen throughout the year.
And keep exploring.
Some of the nicest parts of living in a small town are the places you stumble across rather than the ones someone tells you to visit.
Just Moved to Towcester?
Firstly: welcome home.
There's something lovely about having a little piece of the place you've chosen to call home – which is exactly why we started creating our Towcester collection at The Slow Life.
Our locally designed Towcester pieces make lovely new-home gifts, presents for someone who's moved to the area or simply something to keep for yourself now that NN12 is home.
